Prague Eats: Pub food part 2 - U Medvidku
On my second day in Prague, I asked the tour guide of the "Sandemans Free Tour" for some restaurant recommendations. U Medvidku was one of the places she recommended - it's more of a "normal" pub restaurant, without a special concept like at Lokal.
Here the beer on tap is Budweiser Budvar. And no, it's not related to Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser! I learned that Budweiser is the adjective for the Czech town České Budějovice (or Budweis in German), and so Budweiser is beer brewed in that town.
I ordered a bowl of "hen stock with meat and homemade noodles" because I was still getting over a cold I caught in France. It was okay, a bit salty. I couldn't tell if the stock was enhanced with Maggi - on the Lokal menu they emphatically said their soups did not contain Maggi but you could request it if you wanted it.
For my main course, I got the "Budvar goulash with bacon and white bread dumplings." I wanted to try the goulash because a whole table at Lokal had gotten it, and I saw it on the menus all over town. It basically tastes like the way it looks - beef in brown sauce. I must mention that the dumplings were pretty okay. They were not the dense, doughy balls like in Munich, but rather light, fluffy bread. I read that they are steamed, so it makes sense that they somewhat resemble Chinese 馒头 (man2 tou2), or steamed buns.
