Trip Report IAD-SFO: United Economy Boeing 777-200 (772 HD)

It was a hard fall from the delightful ride on United’s Boeing 767-300 Polaris business class, to Economy class on the Boeing 777-200, reconfigured with just 3 or 4 rows of 2-4-2 business class seats, and the rest of the plane in 3-4-3 Economy class. Not fun. And while this plane is supposed to be rostered on domestic routes, including Hawaii flights, this summer it’s also been operating Barcelona-Newark. Thankfully, I chose the Barcelona-Dulles routing, where even if I hadn’t gotten the surprise business class upgrade, I would have been fine in economy class, with more space and personal TV.

Besides being very cramped, this aircraft was not cleaned well at all. There were tons of peanut and other food crumbs on the floor.

And as I alluded to earlier, there are no TV screens either. There are phone and tablet holders, but good thing I did not bring a tablet because there was gum stuck in the lower part of the tablet holder at my seat!

The holders are the least they could provide, because otherwise it’s kind hard to be eating or drinking and needing to look down at your phone at the same time.

I had a Dasani lime for my first beverage. It’s not my favorite, but it’s handy to order because when you get the whole can, you get more than if you just got a cup of still water.

Second service I got the apple cranberry juice.

And that’s it. A very basic flight on perhaps the least comfortable aircraft in United’s mainline fleet.
