Best of Savannah Eats: the Hype

Best of Savannah Eats: the Hype

The food in Savannah was hyped quite a bit, and for good reason. This is a city with a great eating culture. Actually, all of the South has a great eating culture - people in this region actually enjoy eating food with flavor, variety, and big portions.

Least met expectations: Lady & Sons buffet. Dramatically over-salted and lukewarm. The made-to-order fried green tomatoes were excellent, however.

Most revelatory: banana pudding (on the left). I had had banana pudding before in Cincinnati, but that tasted artificial and syrupy. Lady & Son's banana pudding turned me onto banana pudding for life. Tasted like actual bananas, and surprisingly refreshing, which is not a word I would usually use to describe a creamy dessert.

Most deserving of the hype: Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House. The fried chicken was the best I'd had so far (I had fried chicken 4 times in 3 days).

The line outside Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House.
