American Pantry Staples in Europe
I've brought back plenty of pantry items from the US to the Netherlands, like vanilla extract (I can only find artificial extract here). Other times I specifically seek out American brands here like Arm & Hammer baking soda, which you can find in the Asian markets (Dutch stores only sell baking powder, which is entirely different).
Germany has huge food halls in department stores like Galeria in Alexanderplatz and the famous KaDeWe in the western part. Here I found a whole selection of American pantry staples. But the prices? That Betty Crocker Muffin Mix box at Galeria is €5.40, and the box of eight Pop-Tarts are €6!
That's not as bad as the prices at the more upscale KaDeWe. There, the same boxes of Pop-Tarts were €9!! And the can of Campbell's Condensed Tomato Soup? €4! It's not as if tomatoes, salt, and sugar are not available in Germany...
