Hup Holland Hup! part 1
It's more than 90 degrees F (30 degrees C) outside, and school has let out early because of the heat. Some also speculate it's to allow students and faculty to watch the Brazil-Netherlands quarterfinals. That wouldn't be a stretching conclusion, given that World Cup fever has possessed the Dutch since before it even started.
In Eindhoven's main square, Hyundai set up a giant TV monitor where people congregate in requisite orange garb. Here's a shot of fans gathering even before a game has started.
McDonald's a worldwide World Cup sponsor, has a special promotion going on where you collect the soccer ball stickers on Big Mac, large fries, large drinks, and McFlurries for free product.
The supermarkets definitely have well-laid plans to capitalize on WK (Wereld Kampioen). At Albert Heijn, their "sandwich of the month" was "WK Afrikaans gehakt," filled with sausage and chutney. Baked goods turn orange, such as this orange donut. And every €15 you buy, or with specially designated items, you get a furry "beesie" (little beast). I now have six of them, and have successfully collected all four colors! Red, white, and blue for the Dutch flag, and orange, the national color.
