Montreal Eats: St. Viateur Bagel
St. Viateur and Fairmont Bagel stores are supposedly the two Montreal bagel shops that vie for the best in the city. I had hoped to try both, but the original St. Viateur and Fairmont Bagel were a bit far from the metro. Thankfully St. Viateur has a few other branches, including one near the Mount Royal metro station.
Montreal bagels are supposed to be different from, say, New York bagels because they are sweetened with honey and don't use salt. I'd also say they are a lot smaller than the super-sized American bagels which have become so inflated that they lose their hole!
Here you can see this conveyer of bagels emptying into a holding area, from where the warm bagels are picked up from waiting customers.
The classic sesame bagel. Warm, it really was excellent. The slight sweetness just made me want to eat more.
I also got a "traditionnel" sandwich which was cream cheese, lox, tomato, and capers with a slice of lemon for the train ride. It wasn't quite as good cold, not surprisingly, and was the size for a light snack. I ended up having another sandwich a short while later for dinner.
