Valencia Eats: Ramen at Kuma
Ramen has arrived in Valencia!
Valencia has a few Japanese restaurants, but a couple are "fusion" Japanese-Spanish, and many are Chinese-run sushi buffets.
Kuma has recently opened, and apparently is the from the same owners as Tora, an izayaki that opened last year. I'm quite pleased that Valencia will now be introduced to Japanese food outside of sushi!
For starters, we ordered a chicken karaage. It was nice and fresh, but a bit dry. I was missing the thin sauce that sometimes lightly bathes the chicken which would have added some welcome acidity.
The gyoza was decent, as was the ramen itself. You can choose either miso or shoyu ramen, and I tried the miso. Everything was pretty good, and the braised pork was quite good. I asked the waitress if they make the noodles themselves or if they buy them, and after hesitating a bit, she told me that currently they buy their noodles. But she pointed to a large machine in the corner, saying that they will start making their own noodles.
For dessert, there was dorayaki (okay, but cold and dry), and a black sesame ice cream. Yay for black sesame!
There was about a 40 minute wait to get seated on a weekend night around 10pm (peak dinner time). I'm not sure I would want to wait so long in the future, but I would want to try it one more time, at least, after they start making their own noodles to see how they are.
