What's Showing in Art: Marrakech Bienniale
I felt lucky that I happened to visit Marrakech during its Biennale. Called "Not New Now," the 6th Marrakech Biennale runs through May 8, and focuses on Arab and Northern African artists (who may be living all the same in Paris or London).
I thought it was clever to integrate the biennale with monuments, attracting new audiences and being much more contextual than exhibiting in a white box. Here's the El Badi Palace, with an installation by Rachid Koraichi, an Algerian living and working in Paris.
And an installation by Radhika Khimji, an Omani living and working in London.
After all, Marrakech draws a lot of tourists, but they might not have contemporary art high on their list of things to do.
The Biennale brings the art to them, and at the same time reflects even more deeply on the historical and cultural context.
