Lockdown Day 1: And so it starts...

Lockdown Day 1: And so it starts...

First day of the big city-wide lockdown. For breakfast, I had steel cut oats, with mung beans, and a kind of bean drink powder mixed in for some sweetness and more protein.

This morning our subdistrict sent out a notice saying that we should take out the trash only when doing the PCR test. Then at 9am the entryway leader sent out a message, telling us how we were organized into six groups, and we would be called in turn, probably to avoid congestion. But then at 11:23am she just said, “各小组可以下来了,” meaning every group could come down. Hence you see this big line.

I like my neighbor’s bunny outfit!

I did see some people outside. I thought we were supposed to all be inside, unless we were supposed to take the PCR test in the moment? You can see some of the homes in my neighborhood look kind of makeshift.

On this day, the people administering the PCRs had a list of everyone in the neighborhood. For my address, they saw that my unit was being rented.

It’s still pooled testing. You can see tons of swabs in each vial of pink reagent. I also find it gross that they have a chair there, and they tell you to sit down. No thanks, I’d like to avoid touching things as much as possible.

After the PCR test, I came back and had some of my frozen-from-fresh dumplings - the shepherd’s purse and pork, and cabbage and pork ones. They kind of stuck together, because I didn’t separate them before freezing.

For dinner, I baked one of the tamale pies I had frozen, with a kind of salsa verde and turkey on the bottom, and a topping of creamy and buttery masa with whole corn kernels. On top of this, I added on some cherry tomatoes and cilantro.

I finished off with some excellent pomelo.
