First meal in Nepal: Wo at an unnamed eatery in Bhaktapur

After being driven to Bhaktapur by a driver and a guide, we were given the afternoon to explore on our own. After walking around Durbar Square where the Royal Palace was, and then down to the Potter’s Square, and then past Taumadhi Tole (pictured below) on our way back to the hotel…

…I remembered that the Lonely Planet recommended an unnamed eatery nearby. In Google Maps it shows up as “Aamako Bara Pasal,” and the pictures looked about right for what they were serving.

There is a sign that says “Newari Food, Bara-Wo, Available Here.” Newari is the culture of the people of the Kathmandu Valley, and Wo are these lentil pancakes, also known as Bara.

A man sitting at the door motioned in, that the eatery was inside.

A woman came over and showed us what she had: Wo that had an egg cracked on one side, and Wo that had both that egg and also ground meat - buffalo meat.

I chose the egg and meat version, and on top she spooned this sauce with chickpeas.

We also got a plate of the room temperature potatoes.

Both the pancakes and the potatoes were delicious! The pancakes were soft and spiced, while the egg and meat made it quite substantial while lending texture.

We ate these as a snack, sharing one pancake for two people, but now I wish we had ordered one for each person!
