What’s showing in art: Sao Paulo part 2
A couple other art highlights in Sao Paulo:
Estacao Pinacoteca - this is in a part of a large train station completed in the 1930s in Beaux Arts style, and hosts the temporary exhibitions in conjunction its sister museum, the nearby Pinacoteca do Estado state art museum. I was introduced to the artist Daniel Senise’s vast abstract mixed media pieces (wood and aluminum are embedded in his paintings). I thought he used scale very well.
Sergio Romagnolo was another new artist for me, and I saw a show of his work at Instituto Tomie Ohtake. He had some interesting sculptures, but I most liked the very “fleeting” quality of the paintings he did using what looked like film stills. I couldn’t take any pictures inside his exhibit, but here’s a picture of the building.
It was designed by Ruy Ohtake, and very very 80s looking. When I was walking towards it, I actually thought I walked all the way back to where I came from, since the Renaissance hotel in the Jardins Paulista neighborhood looks is also pink and white striped (and I also designd by Ohtake!).
