I can see why Celine Dion got married here...
My first stop in touring Montreal was Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. Apparently, its painted interior was controversial for being gaudy, but it is for this very aspect that I really enjoyed seeing his cathedral. The whole place just seemed energized yet solemn with this paint treatment.
See how richly detailed it is. You can also see the Moorish influences in the design.
I found a lot of depth in illusory space with the combination of paint, sculpture, and lighting.
I was lucky to arrive just in time for a free English language tour (entrance during the day is CAD$5, at night is CAD$10 with a light show included). I enjoyed hearing about how the stained glass didn't depict the scenes from the Bible, but rather the story of how Montreal was founded. This one is of Jeanne Mance, one of the founding mothers.
This guy carrying the crucifix is actually heading up Mont Royal, near downtown Montreal (the latter gets its name from the former).
