What's Showing In Montreal: Big Bang at Museum of Fine Arts
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has a cool layout. It's three buildings plus this main building by Moshe Safdie. They're across the streets from each other, but connected underneath. Currently there is a great exhibit called Big Bang.
Basically the curators asked a different creative individuals and groups based in Montreal to create a response to a piece in the museum's collection. Below, the filmmakers Denys Arcand and Adad Hannah staged a silent film featuring the Safari Sofa from Archizoom Associati.
This was a fun room. The artist collective En Masse created this intricate wall drawing responding to the painting on the back wall by A. R. Penck, The Start of the Lion Hunt. There were bean bags on the floor and so many people just spent time there sitting and lookin at the drawings.
That was much more successful than the response by two industrial designers, Karine Corbeil and Stephane Halmai-Voisard to this painting, Morning, Lake Superior, by Lawren Harris.
They wrote in their artist statement that they wanted to create a "restful space where visitors to the exhibition will be able to take a break." It came off more like a sculptural installation that wasn't mean to be interacted with, as there was no entry point for people to interact with it. I didn't see anyone take a break here.
