Home Cooking in Łódź
I was really lucky to have been invited to a friend's house in Łódź, and so got to have some delicious home-cooked meals!
My friend knew I was really into pierogi, and lo and behold, we had pierogi with mushrooms and bacon for the first meal! With some Polish beer.
I thought that was the end of dinner, but then out came this plate of ham, sausage, vegetables, bread, and a lard-based spread. This is the kind of Polish ham and sausage which I so love and can't find anywhere else - ham and sausage that tastes fresh and not like it's been preserved in salt.
Dinner ended with dessert, and several shots of "mad dog," a concoction that is mainly vodka, but had raspberry syrup and Tabasco added in! Raspberry syrup would make an appearance later as an option in the beer in pubs.
Unfortunately I didn't get pictures of the other meals I had, but I did a shot of a post-pub crawl late night snack. Herring in cream sauce, herring in tomato sauce (I liked the cream one better), tiny peppers stuffed with cottage cheese (so nice to pop in your mouth!), and of course many shots of vodka - this time straight up. Polish vodka is so pure and smooth that it really goes down easily.
