Warsaw Eats
I ate so much for breakfast in the hotel each morning that I ended up having only one meal a day out, before returning to the hotel to workout and have "supper" in the hotel lounge.
The first full day in Warsaw, I had dinner just outside of the Barbican at a restaurant called Pod Samsonem that I had read about.
I started with "Kawiorżydowski" or "Jewish caviar." Two spheres of liver mixed with egg and onion. Just the right balance of moistness without being too creamy. It was so delicious I contemplated coming back the next day for more!
My main course was Schab w grzybach z kluskami i surówką, or pork with mushroom sauce, with "noodles and salad." I was surprised that it came with a side of cabbage and carrot slaw.
The pork itself was interesting - it was rolled up around prunes. And the mushroom sauce was full of exotic-looking mushrooms. The "noodles" on the other hand were doughy and bland. I didn't eat more than a couple. The salad, which was the same as the cabbage slaw, as well as the carrots were excellent. There were also a few grilled zucchini slices.
On my second day, I was starving by the time I came to this restaurant, right across the street from the US Embassy as I was walking to the Centre for Contemporary Art.
This bread came for free. It was such savory bread - flavored with onion. And it came with what looked like butter but was actually minced garlic and onion. This was also so yummy - I wish I knew what this was called so I could ask for it some other time.
I ordered Żarkoje for my main course. It was like a beef stew (but could have been pork?) with tomato-y sauce, potatoes, and carrots, under a crust that was firm and not too greasy.
So steaming hot inside! Would have been nice to slowly enjoy it, but I was off to the gallery before it closed.
