Albayzin
After striking out at a couple tapas bars (too crowded), I decided to climb up the Albayzin neighborhood, a traditionally Moorish neighborhood.
I must have started in a very non-touristic place, because for a really long time I didn't see a single other person. I went to this little observation area with some benches and a nice view of the city.
Here I had some pastries from an Arabic bakery where I started my journey. From left, a pine nut and hazelnut tart, phyllo rolled with crushed peanuts inside, a pastry with ground almonds, and a shortbread type dough with figs inside. With all of these nuts, I'm sure to be sustained for further touring!
Albayzin is a really different scene. Low, white buildings and twisty turny streets. I had read that they were purposefully confusing, with many dead ends, to confuse invaders.
I hung out here for a while, since there were such beautiful views of La Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás. When it got dark, I descended back down to the city.
Thank goodness for Google Maps on the phone, otherwise I would have been hopelessly lost!
