May 9 Valencia Eats: Burgers at Belmondo

The "gourmet burger" boom is hitting Valencia, and by now I've tried a few of these restaurants. One that has delivered consistently, at a great value, is Belmondo. Their 2-course menú del día which includes main, dessert, and beverage is €7.50, and adding an appetizer brings it to €9.50.

The appetizer choices include a salad, fried green tomatoes, yakisoba, onion and eggplant tempura, and zucchini carpaccio. I tried the onion and eggplant tempura once, and it was overly battered and greasy, so I wouldn't really go for that one again.

Once, after having had their burgers several times already, I chose the tuna teriyaki for the main course. It was quite nice, served on a bed of black soba noodles with a little side salad. Other choices for mains include wraps and ribs with potatoes.

Belmondo is a burger place, though, and their burgers are always pretty great. There's a whole list of different burgers, from your standard cheeseburger to this one with cheddar, mushrooms, and crispy peppers, the "Campera." The burger on the menú del día is 110g, vs. the regular 160g if you order a la carte. For me it's a good size, because the whole burger can fit in my mouth, although the toppings do overwhelm the beef. The beef is always cooked nicely, juicy with a little bit of pink left inside.

Here's a classic bacon cheeseburger, the "Clásica con bacon." I really like the firm, fresh rolls that they come on. They don't disintegrate, and aren't the heavy brioche type of bun. The fries are always very nicely crispy.

The desserts at Belmondo also never fail to please. Here's a tiramisu with dulce de leche. The portion sizes aren't huge, which makes it a pleasingly satisfying meal without leaving you feeling gross afterwards.

Here are the remnants of a brownie with vanilla ice cream.

There can sometimes be a wait to get the food (even if the restaurant rarely seems to have a lot of customers, at least at lunchtime), but it's a solid place for burgers.
