Valencia Eats: Vegetarian menú del día at Restaurante Malmö
Restaurante Malmö is one of a pair of vegetarian restaurant siblings in Ruzafa, the other being Restaurante Copenhagen. The two have minimalist, contemporary interiors, and I've always been curious about trying them. Finally, one Monday I went to Malmö for their menú del día - €10 for three courses but drinks not included.
The menu seems to change quite frequently, so visit their website (www.restaurantemalmo.com) to see their menú del día. On this day, the starter was yucca chips with three dipping sauces. One was a strong parsley dip, one seemed to be beets, and the third an indeterminate creamy one. The chips were a bit greasy.
The main I chose was called "moussaka." I was expecting sliced eggplant topped with bechamel sauce, but it turned out to be cheese-topped stuffed eggplant. I think the stuffing included texturized vegetable protein or seitan. It wasn't bad, but the flavor was quite pedestrian.
I quite liked the dessert - it was a pumpkin bread with hazelnut ice cream. The pumpkin bread was just barely sweet and very home-y tasting, and loved the hazelnut flavor in the ice cream.

It's not earth-shattering food, actually quite homestyle. Somehow I had been expecting more polished, high concept food given the interior design. But I appreciated that they put effort into all three courses (I will never forget the menú del día where the first course was a cream soup in a paper cup and the dessert was a whole apple). Restaurante Malmö is a place I would return to for a reasonably priced menú del día.
