Omicron-era Trip Report: United Club in the SFO Rotunda
Immigration was super fast in SFO, and baggage didn’t take too long either. I was soon making my way to the domestic terminal. Along the way to the United Club in the rotunda, I was just amazed by the number of people there were traveling, and also how people were still wearing cloth masks, and/or masks that weren’t fully covering nose and mouth.
The United Club did have huge canisters of Clorox wipes. I appreciated this, to wipe down my seating area later.
Now, COVID times have really cut into United’s Polaris meal service. Each meal has less quantity of food, and the midlfight snack was miniscule. On the flip side, COVID-era food in the United Club seemed much more substantial and varied, compared to pre-COVID times!
I found individually packaged containers of 3 bean salad, and this fruit and cheese platter.
Also Caesar salad, pasta salad, and big croissant sandwiches.
There were warmers filled with burritos.
And New England Clam Chowder! I totally would have gotten a bowl since I love clam chowder, but coming out of China not feeling very protected against Omicron, which was exploding in the US in December, made me take a pass this time.
Since I was starving after the meager catering on my PVG-ICN-SFO flight, I decided that I would eat in the United Club. I was resistant to eating among the many people eating in the lounge area, all unmasked for long periods of time, so I was delighted to find no one in the business center. With the individual cubbies, this was really made for eating in COVID times, for those of us who are very cautious.
I took the Caesar salad, turkey and cheese croissant sandwich, and the bean and cheese burrito. The Caesar salad was good and fresh, and the turkey and cheese sandwich was very, very generous with the turkey. That meant it was nice and filling, but the turkey was also very salty.
The burrito was unfortunately mainly a dry, flavorless tortilla. I probably wouldn’t go for this next time, despite loving burritos in general.
I really appreciated the substantial offerings at the United Club. They’re a big improvement from before COVID, and were so welcome after being left quite hungry after my transpacific flight.
