Quarantine Diary Day 6: Trying Harder
Breakfast often comes with a carton of milk shelf-stable. I have a growing collection of those milks which I don’t drink.
There was the oft-repeated waxy corn, sausage, and daily hard-boiled egg.
We got a vegetable bao, and the interesting part of the breakfast was a yellow-hued mantou 馒头. I think it was maybe made partly with millet, which is what made it yellow?
Lunch today came with a banana.
This was a shredded chicken, celtuce, and carrot dish.
There was once again slices of fish, but this time it was different. This time there was also black fungus 木耳, and slices of mountain yam, which is what I think gave the dish a kind of floral fragrance. It was interesting, and I quite liked this one.
This place seems to love the kind of brothy corn and carrots and peas.
The flavors in this dish of beef, potatoes, onions, and peppers was good: peppery. But it was so oily, and the beef was incredibly tough and chewy.
After lunch, I again had my banana with a coffee and mint cream.
I also broke open a bag of Trader Joe’s Elote Corn Chip Dippers. I’m not sure if I really liked these so much. There was kind of a strange milky cheesiness to them.
The Trader Joe’s Gummy Tummies on the other hand were very good! The liquid in the tummies gives a funny texture! It’s taking a lot of fun snacks to mentally make it through this quarantine.
Dinner was quite good.
There was a whole fish again! This was quite tasty.
There was also a pork belly stewed with bamboo shoots and other things.
A cabbage and pork(?) dish. I don’t know why so many of the dishes have the vegetables chopped in such tiny pieces, and are so soupy.
Then there was celery, carrots, and - very exciting - tofu skin!
I enjoyed this dinner overall. Somehow, I felt like the kitchen tried harder this time.
