Pilgrimage to Marfa, TX
The sister, Prius, and I drove 8 hours through 60-80 mph winds, and through winding two-lane highways, to get to Marfa last night. Definitely the most stressful drive so far. So what tourists would go through such lengths to visit Marfa? Judging by the cars in the parking lot of the Chinati Foundation (Saab, VW EuroVan, 70's Eagle, and of course the Prius), the usual artworld suspects. And lo and behold, a couple with thick plastic, round architect glasses, two guys in skinny jeans and leather jackets,...
It was truly breathtaking to finally see all of the Donald Judd in its "native habitat." I definitely grew a much great appreciation for him after seeing his work in the vast spaces of Texas, rather than just in a gallery.
All of this artwork, in this one-stoplight town! It was actually a pleasure walking around town. Truly felt like a "Western" town with storefronts reminiscent of the old western films. Hey, even the cars people drive her fit the part!
What was also fascinating was chatting with the art-world folks who are staying in Marfa either permanently or semi-permanently. They were really a western outpost of New York hipster, maintaining the same manner of dress and same habits. I overheard one asking another, "Are we doing yoga tomorrow?"
