Overall, a very nice flight from Sao Paulo, Brazil (GRU) to Johannesburg, South Africa (JNB)...
I decided to splurge at Brasil a Gosto, a restaurant off of a residential side street in the Jardins Paulista neighborhood, and highly recommended by folks on Chowhound and Lonely Planet. I guess it's sort of a "new Brazilian" restaurant...

In my two weeks in Brazil, I have to say that the food I've tried is generally over-salted, oily, and without nuance (if savory), or too sweet (if a dessert)...the big exception being the natural fruit juices which I love. Not to say that eating here isn't fun, courtesy of the snack foods that are in abundance...
I really don't think I've seen a country that loves its ice cream this much! Every where I turn, someone's eating an ice cream cone, soft serve, or milk shake...
Today I saw a very different kind of built environment compared to the concrete Avenida Paulista. The shopping street of Rua Oscar Freire is in the Jardins neighborhood, and is often compared to Rodeo Drive in LA, and Newbury St in Boston.

People say that Rio is to Miami, as Sao Paulo is to NY; i.e. the culture quotient is a bit higher in Sao Paulo...
Rio is probably the first place I've visited where I felt I needed to buy new clothes immediately upon arrival...
So far, I think my favorite thing about Rio de Janeiro are its juice bars. Here, you can try out all of those exotic flavors that sometimes make their way to the US (like acai), only here it's not just a pinch of acai concentrate in grape or pear juice, they actually blend the entire fruit into a pure juice...
