McDecor: Navajo Culture and Burger King
Kayenta, AZ is the biggest town closest to Monument Valley, and is where you can find many of the regular fast food and hotel chains. The McDonald's here put up a nice effort to pay respects to local culture:
But the Burger King here really takes the cake! It has a mini-museum dedicated to the Navajo Code Talkers of WWII, with display cases filled with artifacts and memorabilia from that time.
It had free handouts with short background essays on regional sights (like Shiprock), an culture (like Navajo community structure).
By the bathroom, there's even displays showing American Indian art from different regions, as well as the color sources of a Navajo rug.
And if you're wondering about the food: the Whopper (which I had for the first time) was blah, but the fries were savory and had great crunch. Certainly gives McDonald's a run for its money. And makes me feel like I'm cheating on Ronald for liking it so much.
