Trip Report: AMS-IAD-SAN Part II
Continuing on to San Diego, I had a layover in IAD where I got to try the United Club's "new, improved" food. Definitely a step up from before!
There was a delicious and filling basil chicken chili that was actually a bit spicy. Also on offer was a construct-your-own wedge salad, pita chips and hummus, grain salad, chocolate covered graham crackers, bread, and egg nog for the holidays.
On my IAD-SAN flight, the service was only so-so. When my seat mate didn't respond to the flight attendant asking him for his pre-departure beverage choice, the flight attendant loudly said, "He's not even listening!" When another flight attendant came around asking for main course choices, she just said "Beef, chicken, or butternut squash." When I asked what the chicken was like (they had run out of beef by the time they got to my row), she had to go to the galley and check. I wish they could provide descriptions.
Anyway, first course was salad, with nuts served at the same time. This salad was a bit strange, because the leaves were SO big. Basically five huge leaves the size of a dinner plate. I had to cut them down to bite sized pieces. Plus beets, mandarin orange, and were those feta chunks? They were rather bland for feta.
The chicken turned out to be tamale-stuffed chicken with yucca and sun-dried tomatoes. Delicious, but I had this very same dish in 2012 on United. So much for United's "upgraded" catering on domestic flights. And the 2012 presentation was even better, with the corn husk.
Dinner ended with a question from the flight attendant, "Ice cream?" And she brought out a ready-made chocolate chip ice cream with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. I had to wait for the ice cream to soften, but it was pretty good.
