Trip Report: SFO-IAD-FRA-VLC part II
Out of the four segments on United to/from Europe this trip, my IAD-FRA segment was the only one not upgraded. So I finally got to try United's "new and improved" "multi-course" Economy Class meal.
The "multi-course" aspect which they tout is kind of overblown. Basically other airlines serve the same amount of food or more, but do so all at once. And the "first course" of packaged cheese and crackers was served at the same time as the main meal on my flight. The main course itself seemed to be the same as before - chicken pieces in sauce, along with cheese grits. The grits were pretty good, but this is where written description could have been helpful. Because if I weren't familiar with grits, I would have thought that this was mashed potatoes with strange texture.
Alongside was a rice and quinoa salad which was okay, and "artisan" bread. Any packaged bread will still be worse than the fresh bread served on Lufthansa or Air France.
Later, flight attendants came around with salted caramel gelato which was good, along with small bottles of water for later. These were upgrades indeed.
Breakfast was a downgrade. Just a cold, dry, packaged croissant and jam. Before, there would be a pastry and fresh fruit.
Thankfully I was revived by a shower and nice breakfast in the FRA Lufthansa Senator Lounge. I especially like the German kaiser rolls, bircher muesli, and cake in the lounge. Plus, for Christmas they had these funny chocolates - I got a mushroom-shaped one.
Finally came time for my FRA-VLC flight on Lufthansa. There was a choice of cheese sandwich, or bircher muesli in "original," or forest fruit flavors. I got the original which was apple and raisin. It was okay, but too sweet for my taste - could not compare with the lounge bircher muesli!
